Dr. Ashavaid did her Ph.D in Cardiac Biochemistry from Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, Bombay and proceeded to U.S.A. for her post doctoral studies. She worked under Dr. Arnold Katz at Univ. of Connecticut U.S.A on Cardiac sarcolemma. She also worked with Dr. Steven Wong , Director – TDM services University of Connecticut, U.S.A. under whom she undertook special training in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Toxicology . She worked as an Hon. Biochemist in Chemical Pathology Department, University College London Hospital, London. She undertook training on Pharmacokinetic consultation for TDM at Univ. of Pittsburgh. She has more than 150 publications to her credit. She has also completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration with specialization in Finance from Symbiosis University, Pune, India.
She is an active member of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry and Association of Clinical Biochemistry U.K. Recently, she was awarded the status of a Chartered Scientist by the Science Council, U.K. She is the Vice President of the Association of Medical Technology (WI) and Secretary of Indian Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring-Toxicology. She is on the advisory board of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology and an Associate Member of the Committee of Laboratory Assessment of Drug of Abuse of International Federation of Clinical Chemistry.
She was a Consultant Biochemist at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai for 3 years and presently she is the Consultant Biochemist, Head, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Director Lab Research at Hinduja National Hospital, Mumbai. In 2006 she led the Team of Department of Laboratory Medicine at Hinduja Hospital to work towards CAP accreditation and Hinduja Hospital Laboratory became the first hospital laboratories in the India to be CAP accredited. She was also the Chairperson of the total Quality Management Committee when the hospital was awarded ISO 9002 and is also member of Medical Senior Advisory Committee of the hospital. She is a recognised guide for M.Sc. and Ph.D in Applied Biology affiliated to the University of Mumbai . Uptill now she has been a successfull guide to (6) Ph.D and (5) M.Sc. students.
On the research front Dr. Ashavaid has also been working on the molecular aspects of cardiac genomics. Her recent publications include ACE gene polymorphism studies in patients having coronary artery disease, and identification of Novel LDL receptor mutations in patients having hypercholesterolemia. She has also carried out extensive genetic studies in patients having hyperhomocysteinemia which is a potential risk factor for coronary artery disease. She has worked on polymorphisms of Apo E, Apo CIII, Apo B and CETP all of which contribute to the risk of CHD and has just completed a major project on the atherothrombotic aspects of CVD which was funded by Government of India, Department of Biotechnology. She was also been awarded LTMT award for developing the Multilocus Array for genes implicated in Cardiovascular diseases.
