Dr Biju Soman works as a faculty at AMCHSS, the public health unit of SCTIMST, an institute of national importance in India. It is his strong conviction that many long-standing public health issues in India could be effectively addressed by judicious use of technology. He plays a crucial role in computerizing the routine health information management system in the state of Kerala, which now runs in more than 1000 institutions in the state. It was successfully piloted out in the field practice area of SCTIMST covering a population of 1,31,095 under my supervision, before scaling it up to the whole state. We have created fully Geo-referenced baseline database of all the households in an area of 48.48 sq km with community participation.

Presently he is part of the top-level technical advisory committee to Govt. of Kerala in the implementation of the eHealth Kerala project worth INR 960 million. He teaches Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Public Health Technologies (which contains public health informatics, telemedicine and geographic information systems-GIS), to master of public health (MPH) students. I was involved in the ICMR funded study to analyze the risk factor profile of cardiovascular diseases in Kerala. His experience, as the country node for India for the virtual conference on Improving Public Health by use of Space Technology, made him a strong believer that the creation and distribution of learning materials in online platform are a cost effective way of building competency of various stakeholders.
