Dr Surya Ramachandran is a Program Scientist in the Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes Biology program at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Trivandrum, India. She obtained her Doctorate in Microbiology with specialization in Tumor Biology from Regional Cancer Centre in Trivandrum. She then did a three year post doctoral program on a Department of Biotechnology fellowship with Professor C C Kartha at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology before joining the Diabetes Research Program as a program scientist. Her primary research interest is the study of pathogenesis of inflammatory macrovascular disease in type 2 diabetes. Her studies on secretory monocyte proteins have led to the identification of cyclophilin A as an important marker of detecting vascular complications in type 2 diabetes. She has been trained in LC-Tandem Mass Spectrometry & Proteomic technologies as part of a Visiting Scientist fellowship from Oklahoma Medical Research foundation, Oklahoma, USA. She is the recipient of Distinguished Service Award in Cardiovascular Science Medicine and Surgery from the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences, Canada and ISHR-Torrent Young Investigator Award 2017. She serves as an Editorial board member of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, an International Journal for Chemical Biology in Health and Disease, Springer Journals and as Reviewer of Scientific Reports, Plos One, Mutation Research and Proteomics journals. She is also the Secretary General of the India Section of IACS. She was recently selected for the ICMR Chaturvedi Kalawati Jagmohan Das Memorial Award-2017.
